Free family days out in North West England

Written By On

Having a good time doesn’t always have to equate to spending lots of money. If you live in the North West of England and are currently struggling to make ends meet, here a few places you can head off to for a free family fun day out to help relieve the strain.

Haigh Hall and Country Park

This beautiful stately home is located in Wigan amongst 350 of acres of parkland and wood with breathtaking views of the Welsh Hills. There are monthly craft fairs featuring lots of activities.

The car park is £1.50 for the whole day. There are beautiful walks along the Leeds to Liverpool canal amidst the man made forest and you can ride on the miniature railway for £1 per adult. The wonderful scenery includes overgrown boating lakes and waterfalls.

There is a craft gallery, crazy golf, a model village, shops and a castle. If you want to know more go to  Haigh Hall and Country Park.

The Museum of Science and Industry

I remember science classes in school being boring, however this museum is anything but. Apart from many interesting exhibits on show you can have great fun by getting involved with all the interactive activities they have on offer. And it doesn’t matter what age you are – young or old.

Admission is free and they are open every day. Their address is Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4FP and their telephone number is 0161 832 2244. You can find out more at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Abbott Lodge

Abbott Lodge  is a working dairy farm located near Penrith in Cumbria. They are stocked with beautiful Jersey cattle, hence their speciality is delicious authentic homemade Jersey ice cream. They have a choice of more than 40 flavours all produced on the farm.

There are indoor and outdoor playgrounds and the under 8’s can enjoy a ride on the tractor circuit.

There is also a tea room alongside the area where the ice cream is made.

Admission is free and they are open every day. Their address is Abbott Lodge, Clifton, Nr Penrith, Cumbria, CA10 2HD and their telephone number is 01931 712720.

The World Museum

You will need to set aside longer than you think if you visit this gem of a museum set in Merseyside. Their collections include an Egyptian mummy of a young boy aged about two, a meteorite from Mars that fell into Nigeria over 40 years ago and a cast of a dinosaur skeleton that lived about 140 million years ago.

They exhibit 50,000 artefacts from across the ancient world, 400,000 botany specimens, a geological collection of over 40,000 fossils plus much more.

You can experience their new digital projection planetarium shows that take you on incredible journeys throughout space. You can visit the bug house or the treasure house theatre featuring live music and dance combined information of what is on display.

Everything there is free and they are open every day. You will find them at William Brown Street, Liverpool, L3 8EN. Their telephone number is 0151 478 4393. Find out more wonderful things to see there at  the World Museum

Merseyside Maritime Museum

Merseyside Maritime Museum is not far from the World Museum as the title suggests. Set in Albert Dock on the Liverpool Waterfront, you are able to view original objects taken from the RMS Titanic along with a model of the infamous ship. Admission is also free.

This beautiful 250 acre new type of nature reserve is in the Preston area. It has been designed to take you as close to nature as possible and it succeeds. There are many lovely trails and hides.

Admission is free, but there is a maximum daily car parking charge of £7.

There are beautiful lakes with an incredible floating Visitor Village with shops and a restaurant. Regular free guided walks are arranged which are catered for all ages to help keep you fit whilst having an enjoyable time. You are surrounded by stunning scenery and you will not know where to look first.

You can get more details at Brockholes.
